Janet Luxton was born in Auckland in 1954 and graduated from Auckland Technical Institute in 1972 with a graphic design diploma. She worked as a graphic designer and draftsperson and in 1983 and after working on a 17.5m timber yacht project in New Zealand, she sailed to the United States via various Pacific Island groups. In 1985 she studied painting techniques at San Francisco Art Institute with photo realist Richard McLean, exhibited Saulsalito galleries and in 1988 was invited to study etching and printmaking at Jerusalem Print Workshop, Israel by Director, Arik Kilemnik.
From 1989 she worked primarily in field of etching based at Undercliff Winery in Hunter Valley, exhibiting in various Sydney galleries and her own gallery at the winery. She was invited to prepare stamp series for New Zealand Post, Antarctic Bird Series published 1990. During this period she established a vineyard and winery with her husband James. In 1997 Janet achieved a Gold Award for label design from National Packaging Council of Australia.
James Luxton studied printmaking in Jerusalem in 1988, and together with Janet established Undercliff Winery and printmaking studio in the Hunter Valley where he worked as vigneron and printmaker. James and Janet later established JL Etchings, a printmaking studio and gallery in Paddington Sydney.
Janet’s prints and paintings are held in private and corporate collections in Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Europe and United States.
